Original BON HOMME RICHARD

Lost in battle with HMS SERAPIS, a forty four gun ship of the line, on 23 September 1779, off Flamborough Head, Great Britain.
While Captain Jones lost the Bon Homme Richard he did, in fact, win the battle. It was during this battle that Captain Jones gave the fledgling United States Navy not only it's first major naval victory, he also gave it one of it's most famous quotes.
When asked by the captain of the Serapis, who's vision of the Bon Homme Richard was obscured by the smoke of the battle if he had struck his colors, Captain Jones replied,
" Struck my colors? Sir, I have not yet begun to fight!".
