Served on the Bonny Dick in WG division (bomb buildup) from Nov'67 to Nov'70. Shellback '68 cruise. Lots of great memories and even the bad ones seem almost fun at this later (much) date. Remember water hours for almost the entire cruise of '68 and freezing your gonads in a saltwater shower? I must have been a lot tougher then!

I boarded the "Bonnie Dick" in 1957 at Alameda for the Far East cruise. I was a blue and loved every minute of it! We had some great imes but unfortunately I cannot remember many of my shipmates. But one was outstanding and that was our PO who we called "1000 Watts", Watts was his name. I have the picture of the ship in formt of me now which was one that I picked up while on baord. I will always be proud to say that I served aboard one of the greatest ships in the Navy! God Bless those who didn't come back. They will always be in our hearts.

Served abord the Bonnie Dick from 1970 to decommissioning in Bremerton, Washington, July, 1971. Spent my time in Communications Control room of CR Div - Radio shack. Was RM3. Got the last cruise book and the Union Jack that flew during the last cruise. Great time, terrific friendships, and, as can be seen in this superb website, one of the long-time best-manned carriers the Navy ever had! Glad the proud name lives on.

Great site. I am almost finished with a scale model Great Planes F4U. One of my good friends, Robert Roundtree, was an aviator on the BHR in 1945. I have a photo of a painting someone completed of his plane that also contains the markings, at least that I can see. I am uncertain about the meaning of the markings, and I would also like to see a photo of a similarly marked plane from the BHR. The tail has BHR on the rudder and I assume that it is on both sides. The starboard wing has two white pars running from LE to TE and A just to their left. The cowling has on the port side 44. I assume that it is also on the starboard side. The star has a white bar without the red internal bar. There is painted under the canopy ensign tree VF71 with a circle inclosing a tree. Any further information would be greatly appreciated.

I served on the Bonnie from 1961 through 1965, became a shellback , also remember the swim call Captain (Typhoone) Beebe held. Great years onboard, also some great growing up and a few scarry times as well. I was an EM, worked in all the Elect. shopps ,Batt. locker, em shoplighting and motor, and the generators, usually stood watch on #2 and #3 Gen. switchboard. Iwould love to hear from anyone I served with, back then . I was a young kid, and tried to drink the pacific dry. I would love to know what I do now and make those same cruises and see some of the sites again.

Also bought him a hat with CVA 31 on it in giftshop in Charleston. Wish I could find more memorbilia of the Bonnie Dick to share with him, i.e. authentic patches, etc. I remember putting together a large plastic model of the carrier 35 years ago!

My ex-husband (since deceased) served on BonHomme Richard from 1964-66. He was a Seaman II. I was classified as a "Wes-Pak Widow" then. I have a photo of him "pulling in the lines". This was an exciting time of my life (while I was stateside having babies!) I want to THANK all the guys (and gals) who served then fighting to keep our USA safe. I recently toured the Yorktown in Charleston, SC, just to find out that the hull of it is the last bit of scrap left of the "Bonnie Dick". While it was in dock in San Diego 1964, I actually got to visit my husband on board while he was on night watch! Also got to see it anchored in Long Beach in 1966. What a ship!!! I was so excited and PROUD to stand on it again. Did anyone know him JOHN HIRAM SHOATS or his buddy, Tom Steinbrook or Jack McMillion? GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU WHO SERVED.

I served on the Bonnie Dick from 1962 to 1966 in the V-1 division. A very exiciting part of my life that I have vivid memories of almost 40 years later. If there are any "fleight deck" yellow shirts or blue shirts out there, please drop me a line. I would like to contact Bristol, discharged in 1968 after the quake in Ankerage Alaska distroyed his home. Also Phil Hayman, and Burkoffer & Coons. If anyone has cruse books from this period, I sure would like to see them. I lost mine due to a nasty divorse.

What a Great site for BHR vets. I am a current member of the A3 SKYWARRIOR Assoc. In 1957 I was an AQ3 attached to VAH-2 at North Island. In the spring of that year we went aboard BHR with 3 of our A3D's for CARQUALS. During an attemped trap, our XO, pilot of No.4 aircraft, struct the edge of the ramp and exploded, all were lost and nothing was recovered. Also aboard were my division officer and a CPO. I witnessed this tragedy from the island, 3 levels above the flight deck, the ship's position was about 100 miles off Monterey CA. Does anyone remember the date of this accident or were I can find it? as I'm trying to record some of my experiences in NAVAIR. I salute all those who served honorably aboard the "Bonnie,"and especialy those lost their lives aboard this great ship.

What a great websit! Being new to "cyberspace" I had no idea there was such intrest out there in the old gray lady Bonnie Dick. The internet is just incredible. I went through the guestbook and it brought back so many geat memories. I served aboard Bonnie Dick from Jan 69 through Dec. 1970 in the Navigation Dept. as a Quartermaster 3rd class. Those were two of the best years of my life only I was too young and stupid and inexperienced to realize it at the time. I spent many hours at sea and anchor detail steering Bonnie Dick into and out of harbors from San Diego (where I currently live) to Pearl Harbor, P.I., Hong Kong, Sasebo, Yokosuka, and Singapore. One of the biggest bummers of my life was loosing all my Navy memorabilia includeing my Bonnie Dick cruisebooks due to a screwup while moveing several years ago. I don't have much hope in finding one but if any of you guys know where I can get a Bonnie Dick WestPac crusiebook from either 1969 or 1970 please contact me via e-mail. I would be willing to pay any reasonable offer (like ANYTHING! HA!). Sure is great to know so many guys like myself are out there who view their years aboard Bonnie Dick as the highlight of their lives. How about a re-union in San Diego where Bonnie Dick was home-ported for so many years? Happy New Year to all my fellow shipmates who had the privelege to serve aboard this warrior ship.

Greetings! I served aboard the BHR from December 1969 to November 1970-her final WestPac cruise! (anyone remember the excitement when they dropped a Bullpup missle into the magazine while we were tied up to the quay in San Diego?)! Was part of the photo crew that put together the 25th Anniversary cruise book to honor the BHR's distinguished career. Like many others, was given a 3 month "early out," and didn't go to Bremerton for her decommissioning. Sad to hear the "Bonnie Dick" has been scrapped. I have a lot of old photos, movies and memories from my days aboard. Was just curious to see if there was any info on the web about the BHR and found this site. What a great find! I read all the messages and recognize a few names from the OP Division who served with me. I will soon have a web address of my own, meanwhile, anyone interested can contact me at "maxfly767@aol.com," the message will get to me.

I served aboard "Big Dick", as she was called, from before commissioning in 1944 until she was taken to Bremerton for the first decomissioning. I was an IC Electrician, but spent much time up in the island, as my battle station was in the "bull horn" room. I'd like to hear from anyone else who may remember me. Bill Petty

I just checked your site. Well done. It was a pleasant surprise to see my photos in the landing sequence loop on the home page. for those who remember the "Whales" when they were the heavy attack arm for the BHR, go to the a3 site:a3skywarrior.com. I have a piece of the flight deck on my desk. I lived in LA when the BHR was scrapped in Long Beach and took one last tour aboard. our call sigh was Hollygreen, which the Japanese air controllers butchered to Haw we gween. Needed= a list of the ones that attended the 2000 reunion!!!!!This may help some of us find our lost friends. It seems a shame that there are no people from the bowels of the ship where every thing started, these were the guys that kept the ship running. With out them it would be dead in the water. I am one of thoes and I can run a puter, I thought I would never learn but I did!!!!! 61 to 65 OIL LAB & #4 fire room.

Just visited your site for the first time in three years, nice job, the A-3 trap sequence is great! I noticed in your memorial section that you don't have BHR's last two casulties, LTJG Lloyd Howie, 15 May '70 and CDR Dean E. Kaiser, 14 June '70. Both from VF-53. The latter was my father, anyone out there have any good info on his loss? One of my greatest childhood memories is the dependant's day cruise in March (?) of '70. If you're interested, I can supply all the names for the '69 VF-53 pilots posed on the Crusader. Thanks, Kent Kaiser

Served aboard "Bonnie Dick" on 1962/63 WESTPAC cruise. Was an AMS2 at the time, worked as a troubleshooter on the F-3H2 Screamin' Demon. VF-193 Ghostriders were head & shoulders above other squadrons, Battle E's a bunch. Transitioned the squadron to F-4H's & the squadron redesignated VF-142 before I rotated ashore. Of all the carriers I served on in 30 years, "Bonnie Dick" was special.

How wonderful to find this site! My husband, Bill Backhurst (ADJ1)(retired - now deceased) served on The Bonnie during the early 60s. We named our first child and oldest daughter after the BHR -- Bonnie Ann. There were so many air squadrons in our lives, however, I believe he was in VA 195 at the time. For many many years The Bonnie is so dear to my heart. If anyone remembers Bill Backhurst please contact me, especially if any of you are the guys who rustled a turkey from a turkey farm one night and brought it to our door in the middle of the night and being city boys from da Bronx and Chicago, didn't know how to dress it!

VF874 & VF781 Fighter piloits...From the USS Bon Homme Richard in the early 1950's! My father, Herbert L. Newmark, flew F4U's and shares very little in the way of stories with his children about the days he served in the war. He has attended a few reunions and is hoping to find someone out there to share his stories with, again. To those of you that spent time with him and the others out there...go in God's speed. I'm pleased that you used the picture of Filey Bay to Flambro' Head as well. We have a website now, and I forgot to tell you in the e-mail. It's still under construction as they say, but it's www.festival.filey.co.uk and all about JPJ and the original Bonhomme Richard. Hope you answer my e-mail. I lost a lot of information off my computer when it crashed _but managed to save a lot as well - but not e-mail addresses including some from crewmen from the BHR. Best wishes and Bless you All. I found Ski Kosiorek's entry in the log here and plan to shoot him an e-mail. Also looking for cruise books for '63 to '66, along with any memorabilia as I lost most of mine to fire years ago. Good sailing to you all, and I'll be back

I will remember my cruses aboard forever, and the friendships. We took steel and heart to sea, we took our youth and our labors, we carried the war to our enemies. We left our sweat in her wake, and she left us the memories of stack gas, spinning props, long long long hours. Remember the terror of "GQ fire in the hanger bay". GOD bless all who served her, GOD bless her. May we never forget our shipmates who met GOD on or near her decks. B.D.Spencer V-4 Div. 1966-68'

Signed the guest book a couple of times a while back but have yet to be able to see anyone whom I served with. Real nice site but it loads slower than molasses running uphill in winter (ha ha)

Saw your name on the Oriskany Forum.....Unfortunatly The Big "O" is to chopped up by the breakers to economically save now...so she'll probably rust away in Texas till the DOD makes a deal sweet enough for International Shipbreakers to finish her off......I remember tieing up together with the BonnyDick at the Quay Wall @ North Island circa 64/56/66

Greetings to all former 'Bonnie Dick' Sailors!

I served aboard Oklahoma City, Providence, Brinkley Bass, and Hornet for many years in Westpac from 1965 to 1972, and I am here to tell you what a great job you all did during 'Nam! Bonhomme Richard was always a great sight to see in action, and could always be counted on to do the job. Know this: The Bonnie Dick and the outstanding men that fought her were NOT responsible for us not achieving victory in 'Nam. You guys gave the full measure over there and kicked a lot of butt! All the best to you all and to a brave, gallant fighting vessel, USS Bonhomme Richard, CVA-31. Regards, Steve Weiss, RM1, USN (RET)

I served aboard in 1961 for 6 months as a Radarman Seaman. I liked her very much, had a lot of good and special friends (Rex,Nobe,Ray,to name a few) but had to depart the ship the day before departure to WestPac to enter Balboa Navy Hospital for an emergengy eye operation. Was in the hospital for about 15 days, and expected to catch up with the "Bonnie Dick" in Japan, but was transferred onto the USS Bennington CVS 20, which had just returned from WestPac. So to all of you who may remember me, that is why I just "disappeared", and never got to say "So Long." Rex lives about 25 miles from me....we see each other occasionally. Sorry to hear of the passing of a great ship. Till later..............

I was an AQF3 with VF-191. I joined the ship in Japan after she returned from her Insian Ocean cruise. If I remember correctly, that cruise got extended due to the Tonkin Gulf incident. The BHR was my first introduction to the ocean going navy after I goy out of A-school in Millington, Tenn., quite an experience for an Illinois school kid, but some of the most exciting years of my life.
It's a great website too. Thanks Al_Jones1@Prodigy.Net

Any possibility of having a copy added to this web site???? I enjoyed going through it while I was growing up and ended up putting nine years in the Navy myself.

Weather Guesser - OA Division 1959 - 1961. Joined 59 cruise at Yokosuka. On board when we received heavy damage in a typhoon. Went to Bremerton with the bow very low. Dry dock for several months. Loved Seattle. Short time in Alameda then on to North Island.

I remember venting Av Gas during a man overboard drill. We found out the hard way that Av Gas and flares do mix. I saw that fire coming as flames began to boil at the starboard bow then swept down the side of the ship. I believe there were some reservists severely injured or killed. All the life rafts were burned. I felt the flames on the 07 level!

But most times were great. Nothing but fond memories. I am so proud to have served on such a fine ship with the greatest people I have ever known.

I have a 65 cruise book if anyone out there needs some of those pics scanned to them. Everyone tell other shipmates out there about these websites so we all can get reaquainted again. I sure enjoy this site, keep up the good work.

I am looking for information on my cousin Ronald Lee Zempel from Grand Rapids Minnesota. He was killed Feb 27th 1967 aboard this ship as they were trying take off in a UH-2B and ended up in the water. He was never found after an extensive search, along with the rest of the crew. I recently went to Washington D.C. and found his name on the Vietnam wall, you can see this at http://www,radiks.net/~krum/hero. God bless the men and women of the US Armed forces.

with memories of a great ship and time. Many things come back to me.Never learning to duck, and getting smacked in the face by a shear ring at launch. The horrible accidental launch of a F9F into the blue shirts, killing one green shirt.

from around May 1961 to February 1962. The PO1 was Cox. I
hung around with Buck Fraizer, also in G3. I don't remember
you though. I was first assigned to the Officers Boat, with
Ferguson. Torres was the PO2. I left the BHR in February
62 for duty at VU-7, at North Island. I guess if you don't

Bob,
Thank you so much for this excellant web page on one of, if not the most underated and uncovered aircraft carriers in the United States Navy. Yet, in many ways the Bon Homme was the greatest. Not too many people know (and sadly too few care) that she was the only Essex class carrier to fight in all three of the "big" wars-WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. I think that it is a shame that more is not written on this great carrier. Once again thanks for the web site, the tid bits of info, and the great pictures.

Unfortunately he passed away in 1982, and I remember that he told me he was on an aircraft carrier, but I don't remember which one it was. I would appreciate it if someone who knew him, or could tell me which ship it was he was on, you could email me at DarthV.Schw@excite.com Thanks for your time

Any shipmates interested in acquiring old cruisebooks and/or out-of-print books of Naval interest? Tom Clark, 914-472-2071, is a professional bookfinder who has been of great assistance to me in locating both. Example: he currently has access to two copies of BHR's "Second Hitch" cruisebook of 1951(includes recommissioning and first Korean combat cruise), among others. He's located three books for me already, and checks-in by phone or Email at least once a week with his latest finds. Tom's a retired teacher, so you can reach him just about anytime, Eastern Time. Be sure to let him know you're from BHR!

My father,Robert Andrew Curp, served on this ship in the 1960's as a radarman. Just wanted to make it a matter of record that he passed away Jan 17,1999 at his home in Fairfield, Ca. He was only 59 years old.
His times aboard the Bon Homme Richard where his favorite and he was really looking forward to any reunions or organizations regarding the men of the Bon Homme.
I was only a young girl when my father was in the navy but those are some of my fondest memmories. I grew up in Dayton, OH....an air force town.....but i can't tell you how good it felt when some men from the navy recruitment station just happened into the store where i was working. They were dressed in their whites.....well....it had been so long since i'd seen a navy uniform...i almost cried.
Thank you.

Served on the Bonnie Dick 1966-1968. Photographers Mate, OP Division. Made two WestPacs, Yankee Station, Vietnam. We were all young & did the very best we could, no matter the cost. I don't remember a single shipmate who wouldn't back another up in a tough spot. We fought hard & we played hard. Who could ever forget liberty in places like Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, & P.I.? But I also remember the long hours, days, weeks, & months at sea, hung bombs on shot-up planes, crashes, & shipmates killed or lost at sea. And you never forget those scenes, especially when you're 18. May God bless & take care of them all.

I went aboard your great ship during her final days before being scrapped. Took a great deal of photos and even shot a little video. I have a couple dozen ships phone and a bunch of the sound powered units. Also a real nice brass two lensed aircraft warning light from the main mast. It was a shame to see her scrapped, I really enjoyed my many visits to her. Keep up the good work I am glad that I found your site.

I was in Naval Security Group Detachment Three and came aboard in Subic Apr 61 from the USS Coral Sea CVA-43. I left the ship in Sasebo in Sep and returned to NCS PHIL at San Miguel. I was a CT3 "O" branch cryptographer at that time and we occupied SUPRAD spaces port side, just forward of the angle deck. You have an excellent web site.

I served aboard the Bonnie Dick from mid-late '69 through
decomissioning ceremony, Bremerton, Washington, '71
I still have the union jack - or is that the ensign? (It's the stars-on-a blue field-only flag) that
flew on her bow for 3 years or so during WestPac. I was an RM3 - radio shack - Sad to hear how she ended up, but the memories will always by vivid.

Ship's Company, VN Westpac's Five ('69) and Six ('70)

I visited BHR in San Pedro during the shipbreaking, and she looked like floating roadkill. I saw one of her sisters, ex-BOXER, being broken up in Brooklyn when I was stationed there, and I thought I ws ready for whatever shape BHR was in. Wrong! Better to remember her turning into the wind, eight burning, four turning, with Foxtrot at the dip.

HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME GETTING INTO THE BHR WEB SITE. NEVER
HAD ANY PROBLEMS BEFORE. THE OLD LAYOUT SEEMED TO BE MUCH BETTER.
AS I SAID I TRIED TO SEND YOU A MESSAGE SEVERAL TIMES BUT WOULD

I was a pilot in VT(N)91 aboard during WW2. Our squadron skipper was Smith, air group commander was Avery. Ships captain was Rule who was replaced by Frick. We joined the task force off of Okinawa and stayed with it until the war was over. We were replaced by night air group 52 at Guam and rode the ship back to Alameda as passengers. VF(N)91 was our night fighter squadron. I have squadron emblem pictures if needed by the historians. Best of luck to all

Served aboard BHR from 1/51 to 9/52. IC2 in "E" Division. Was first electricians mate aboard for recommissioning. Came to her from the seaplane tender USS Curtiss AV-4. Captain Cecil B. Gill was our captain when we recommissioned her and took her for the first cruise to Korea. He left to become Admiral "Jocko" Clark's Chief of staff and came back aboard when "Flag" rotated aboard during the second cruise. He was a good Captain and the Bon Homme Richard was a good ship. I have a number of pictures (some of raids) and a copy of the "Battle Action Report" for that first cruise.

Hi Bob,
Let me be among the first to sign. I served on the BHR
from recommissioning in 1955 to approximately Dec. 1957.
I was an MM2 in the Forward Engine Room. I would like to
hear from any former shipmates I served with. At the time
I did the usual complaining but, looking back in retrospect,
it was one of the best experiences of my life. Good luck
as the new web master.
