Attack Squadron 195 Embarked In USS Kitty Hawk CV-63.
On 31 January 1971, Petty Officer Cartwright was working in his rate, performing intermediate level maintainance on an aircraft located near sponson 11 in the number three hanger bay just forward of the fantail. At this times was engaged in night operations off the North Vietnamese coast. Petty Officer Cartwright was last seen at approximately 0615, he is now known to have
been absent from then until 0700 which was the time he was to have gone off-duty. The watch on duty at sponson 11 reported nothing unusual during this time period. A shipmate later reported Petty Officer Cartwright could not be located, an immediate search effort was undertaken to find him.
A thorough search of the ship including annoucements over the 1MC ( the ship's general speaker system)
to which he failed to respond, failed to locate him. An extensive search by helicopter and destroyer along the
course traveled by Kitty Hawk from the time of his disappearance failed to achieve any results.
Petty Officer Cartwright was lost approximately fortyfive nautical miles east of the North Vietnamese city of Ron. He was initally placed in the Missing Casualty Status, on 4 February 1971 his status was changed to Killed in Action.
